A NEW YEAR 1792 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Im sitting in the small cove just off the edge of my fathers farmland, some miles from the house. I like just to venture away from him sometimes. Give myself some room to breath. Society is dreadful these days, at school the girls I'm aqquainted with never stop talking about themselves.. and the boys.. well. They arnt the politest creatures on gods green earth . I stare down at some colorful fishies in the water from my rock, smiling a little at them and partcially my own reflection as my hair falls into my face. I sweep it back again with one hand and then look around me as I notice one of the maids standing there.. "Ye better be off t' school, miss." She frowns, sternly..I roll my eyes and get up, reaching for my bag.. Its heavy.. full of books. Pointless books. But I know them all well enough. I dont mind school. It would be alot better without the other pupils distracting me, I suppose. I would ask My father for a home tutor but.. no..I look back again at the maid as she follows me along the pathway back to the house (where I fetch my jacket and comb my hair into place) and then back again to the town. The school bell is ringing and I notice all of the other children in lower years running to the gates. The indian girls and boys stand staring at us.. I frown. They bother me when they do that.

I woke up late that morning. Too late. As the lessons offically begin, I shove my last two books into my bag roughly. I swing the bag over my shoulder and walk to the ladder. I sleep on the attic above my parents' tavern, and I have to shove the ladder down first before I can climb to the lower floor. And from there I take the other stairs with two steps at the time, hurrying down. In the tavern my mother is sweeping the floor, and my dad is nowhere to seen. "You're awefully late." The tone of her disapproval is thick and unavoidable. I don't bother to reply but I steal two thick slices of the bread that's sitting on the bar. His mother stops sweeping as he heads for the door. "You better be in early today, Jack! I need your help tonight in the tavern!" "Alright!" I pull the door shut behind me, knowing that I won't keep my promise. I shove one of the slices of bread into my mouth, as I head down the sandy road towards the school.

I sit down at the desk, getting my books out and placing them beside me. The lesson is slow and I have to stop myself from yawning halfway through, luckily the appearance of a late-comer perks me up a bit and I pear over at him as he goes over to the male side of the classroom. Its all mixed here... because theres so few pupils all together. The girls laugh and say its because most of the east india trading company are eunichs. I think about it and giggle to myself. Which makes it look like im laugh at *him*.. "MISS HOLLOWAY! Are you finding this the slightest bit amusing?!" The teacher yells. I go red. Everyone looks at me. ".. No miss." "Anymore distruption from you and it'll be detention."

I glance over to the girl that's getting told off for laughing, but let my gaze wander back to my book when the teacher looks over to me. They're really strict here, and they tell you off for even daring to glance over to the other side of the classroom cos its supposed to be inproper. Or at least that's the excuse they like to cough up. As the teacher continues her lesson (which is also just for the feminine half of the class), the boys bend over their textbooks to make the exercises. My textbook is upside down, actually, and I glance over to the window instead.

I bend over my book too, trying to make it look like im working, instead I glance very slightly at the late boy as he looks outta the window, wondering why hes determined to get himself into even more trouble. Boys! ... He's just looking for attention.

The boy who's sitting next to me elbows me, and I give him a glare as I look over. But he nods over to the teacher who's looking quite annoyed by me. So I change my mind about the glare, and direct my gaze to the text instead.
It's about science, that much I figured out, but I can't really fix my attention on the texts. I look at the pictures and think about what I can do soon as school's out instead.
As time passes even *pretending* to focuss becomes a impossible task. From under my eyelashes I glance around the classroom. The girls are all sitting up straight, listening to the teachers lectures on spelling. I see a mouse creep past the wall though, and my lips twitch into a slight smirk as I can predict what's going to happen.
One of the girls feels something run by her shoes, and she looks down and screams at the top of her lungs at the sight of the mouse "A RAT!"

I frown a little, thinking that its quite cute .. madisol and the other posh girls squeal together and I just watch it run along, disappearing into a little hole before one of the boys can squish it. I grin and soon after the bell goes.. thank the lord. The teacher makes us stand and dismisses us. I reach down and get all of my books back into my bag before heading out after all of the other girls.

I shove my book back into my bag and leave with the crowd, though I'm sure I'm one of the few who's so absolutely thrilled to see the sun again. I hate school to the very depth of my soul, and every day when it's over I feel like I come back from death itself.
My stomach is grumbling with hunger, and I decide to venture down to the market to get something to eat. I promised my mother to come home and help, but I find this a very, very good excuse not to. I push one of the other boys that I hang out with a lot, "Watch it!" "HEY!" The lad glares, but when he sees its Jack he gives that up. "What are you up to then?" "Gonna go down to the market wanna come?" I ask. "I have to go home to do my homework." He shrugs. "sorry." As we come to the mainroad he turns to go home, and I sigh. Great. Why is every single kid in that class such a posh do-good that does what mommy tells him too? I kick a rock away hard, annoyed that I'll have to go by myself again.

I watch them all as I stand outside the gate, doing my bag up, actually planning on going to the market myself.. I dont get the chance when im at home because the maids follow me everywhere and think this place is 'inproper' for young ladies. I smirk a little, follow the boy a few faces behind, not giving him much notice. I wouldnt dare. If my dad ever found out I so much as spoke with a boy he'd be.. angry. I divert my gaze to the ground as I walk, not noticing as a small indian boy comes at me from behind, trying to reach into my bag for money.. I turn sharply as he rushes off with my purse.. "Hey! Theif!" I yell.. not running after him.. I cant in this dress...

Since I go to the same school I am not walking far behind Anouk. However, I don't walk alone. My dad has one of his slaves always near my school, just t o make sure nothing like a robbery would happen to his little girl. I see it happen, I see a little boy steal Anouks purse. I look around, noticing that absolutely none of the bystanders help her out but continue with their daily work. "Oscar! You have to follow that boy, he stole a purse!!" I tell him, half demanding it. "But miss Greenland, By all means no, I can not let you out of my sight" "GO!" I tell him, and with that order he has nothing to say anymore. I quickly scurry over to the girl 'Are you okay ? I saw what happened! That boy should be punished'
