"They had visited before they disappeared, yeah. They came, stayed a while, and left again." I tell her what I think that happened. "I don't see why that's evidence against me, miss. Tashmore Lake was pestered by some killing freak at that time, who had made more victims before.. my theory is that he got to Amy and Ted when they wanted to head back to the city." It's the only logical explanation *I* could think of, when I pondered over what happened night after night once the two had turned out to be gone. "And the blood... that killing idiot I told you about? He had killed Chico." I pause, knowing how rediculous that sounds. "...My dog." I declare. "The only blood found was at the spot where he had pinned Chico's corpse to the garbage can - *tell me*, miss Dickens, if I was the psycho in that town, why the hell would I kill my own dog which had been with me since forever?" I want to leave, want to get the hell outta here now - but I force myself to stay put.

( I )
She shook her hand "People do the strangest things to not seem guilty, Mort." Something wasn't right. Something in his explanation didn't make much sence to her. "And isn't it damn convenient that both your enemies are now gone ? No one to annoy you with divorce papers, no annoying guy who humilated you. Who didn't make you feel the man you thought you were? Come on. Those rumours seem more true then the word of one very confused man, Mr. Rainey. As a fan I'm just trying to help you out, trying to find the truth..cause I wouldn't want my favorit writer to be accused of something terrible he didn't do."
Fan was highly exagerated and she didn't believe herself when the words came out.

(Fuckit, sorry!)
Neither did Mort. He narrowed her eyes at her. "Miss Dickens," His voice was almost toneless now. "I don't believe it is, in fact, any of your business. Neither Amy nor Ted was my enemy, we weren't best friends but I bet you don't go around killing every person you don't get along with, now do you? And on the account of being *confused*, I think I can balance my actions and mentality perfectly well, thank you *very* much. I don't know *who* you are, and why you think it's your job to mingle, but I suggest you stop it and mind your own business, alright?" He was ready to leave now.

He was ready to leave and she saw him trying to leave as well. It would have been useless. The beginning wouldn't have worked for her as a good start. She needed something.. something to keep him here somehow.
With a sigh she mumbled "Carolina Smith, journalist" introducing herself, for real now. "I'm just going to find out the truth and nothing but, Mr. Rainey. With or without your help.. though I suggest you'd help, it tends to make things a lot easier"

At her 'real' introduction his determination to leave wavered for a moment. He hesitated, but then sank back into his seat. Great. He sighed, and drew a hand through his messy blond hair. He could've guessed when she started to become all Gestapo like about the matter. Only a journalist would have a big enough nose to stick it into someone else's business.
"Is that your usual approach, miss Dickens, Smith, ...whatever?" He obviously wasn't pleased with her approach. "Lying to people first, then trying an honest approach?" He raised an eyebrow.

She tried to hide her surprised expression. And surprised she was. He stayed. He didn't run away now that he knew who she was, in stead he stayed to talk to her... Why ? What was in it for him? Had he not evaded more than a thousand journalists already? Or did he talk to them aswell, just like he was talking to her right now ? Whatever his reason was, it made her doubt a little, and doubt wasn't a good thing to feel at this moment, being eye to eye with a killer.
"Apparantly it's working, Mr. Rainey.. can I say Mort?" She didn't wait for his answer and kept rambling. After the doubt came the nerves and it was showing... "Listen, sorry for the lying.. I just wanted to get the truth.. and I think you might know that lying sometimes is the only way towards the truth.. or at least the truth you want people to believe with your lies.." By now her palms were sweating and she was dead-glad that they were in a public place. He couldn't hurt her here if he wanted to.

"I'm not so familiar with lying to people as you might assume." He told her simply. "Listen, miss, if the truth is what you want.. I didn't do it. I don't know why you expect that I'll suddenly change my mind about that now that you're here to ask me - but I can't twist reality like I can in my books, and I can't change what happened so I'm gonna stick to what I told anyone who asked before, too. I didn't hurt Amy or Ted. Their disappearance is as much a mystery to me as it is to any other." He remained calm during his speech, hoping this would make things settled.

"hm.. right.." was her only reply at first. Her thoughts were drifting off. She had read many articles about the disappearance of Ted and Amy, she had read about Mort's relationship with Amy, how it began and how it ended, she even managed to get her hands on a police report about the missing couple.. All led to the same conclusion Mort kept pretending to be innocent. And if all led to that same conclusion than he was either a wonderful liar whom enjoyed his sick disgusting games or he was extremely mental...
"What do you think happened to them ? Every one has their assumptions.. what are yours? " she asked, really wanting to know.

He shrugged, seeing no harm in telling her. "My assumption is that some psychopath made his way down to Tashmore Lake. He played around, killed Tom Greenleaf and that policeman, pinned my dog to a trashcan, god knows what else." His mouth ran dry as he told his theory... no wonder, the whole situation was macaber and sinister - he disgusted it as much as any other. "I guess that when Amy and Ted left my place after we discussed the divorce papers, he or she was still around. I guess it's the same person who did all that, who got to *them* as well that night." He swallowed.

"Right.. Right..but that wouldn't make much sence Mort.. you and I both know that the person who murdered your dog and Tom greenleaf AND your old publisist(whomever the big black dude was ) was a person who didn't cover up corrected. And we both know that Ted and Amy are nowhere to be found.. It couldn't have been the same person because they opperate differently.. and that's why we also both know that you are still a suspect. Your story isn't waterproof.. tell me Mort.. have you ever heard of Onschuldswaan ?" (let's just pretend that's an english word my dictionary isn't near me right now )
