~~~~~
I'm in the galley as the ship comes to dock. I know I should be updecks helping, but that aspect of piracy faded away a couple of months ago, for me. I've started to avoid any hard labour.. the ropes keep ripping up my palms and I'm far too weak to do most of the jobs. If the captain saw me in such a way he'd either leave me somewhere in the middle of the caribbean or walk me off the plank, im sure... but then again I lack knowledge on this group of people. In my mind I have this terrible picture of what a pirate is. Before I joined them it was a little less grusome, I have to admit. But when you're stuck on dry land, no place to turn to.. a home, travelling throughout the ocean.. couldnt of seemed a better idea. Now I just ache more than I did before. And I spend most nights afraid of what will happen next. There arnt any other women on this crew, and I know im here for just one reason. That's been clear to me from the moment I arrived. That's why the captain isnt too fussed when Im not on decks with the others, I guess. When I hear them calling and the gang plank being lowered I slowly make my way up.
The port was buzzing with the news of a new ship arriving today. Rumours said it'd be pirates, and eventhough the town was not a pirate haven like Tortuga or anything likewise, the town's major seems always willing to 'forget' the laws on not associating with pirates when they bring good business to his town.
I've been stuck here for almost two weeks now, and my body seems to ache in disagreement with my long stay on land. I have nothing to leave behind in this town, so obviously I find myself at the docks when the grand vessel makes her way into harbour. Maybe they'll need an extra hand. If not, I might have to convince them otherwise. Either way, I feel determind that this ship will be my ticket out of this place once again..
When most of the crew are in the town I emerge and sit alongside the railings, looking across at the people in the port. Most of the women.. and the well-to-do men give me a couple of degrading looks as they pass by. I know what they think I am, and I just have to dismiss it. My gaze wonders back to the ocean, crashing between the ship and the docks. "I didnt see you updecks 'till now, Cassandra." I jump a little as I hear a voice call over to me, my thoughts start to get a bit scrambled up and I desperately try to come up with a secure reason... but there isnt one, this time. ".. I.." "Nah, don' worry. You dont need one. Yer pretty useless t' have around anyway. Yer lucky that you keep the crews morale up.. otherwise i'd kick y' off." He says quite bluntly. I stay silent as he peers down at me, I dont want to make eye-contact. "Will y' be joinin' me fer a drink, luv?" I dont really have a choice.. "... I suppose so." I mumble, standing up and quickly I begin to follow him down the gang plank, checking my reflection in the waters, as I go.
I sit on a barrel at the docks for quite a while, observing as the crewmates leave ship one after another. For a while there's no activity, but then two more people appear. Judging on the fact that they stayed behind this long, I figure one of them is oughta be the captain. So I hop of the barrel and saunter over to the couple. One of them is a woman, I notice. Maybe the fellow's wife. I pay her no mind as I adress the man instead. "Morning. I judge you are the owner of this vessel, eh?" I ask him, nodding at the ship for a second.
I pause some steps behind the captain as he is stopped by a rogue-ish man. Not unlike any other i've seen in these past months. He's tanned, dark hair, dark eyes.. and in a complete mess. dirty, inked and golden toothed. I study him as I let the two converse. "That I am, lad.. what would you want with me?"
"I'd like t' join yer ship, mate. Yer pirates, aye?" I gesture at the town. "I need a way out of this town. An' I'm worth me salt, capt'n, ye'll see." I look at the girl at his side who seems to be studying me. She doesn't seem like much... half-hiding behind the fellow I'm talking to.
As soon as he looks over at me, my gaze reverts to the captain as he replies... "Well I was in needa somemore men aboard, this one dont give much to the ship." he gestures towards Cassandra, "I guess y' can pay off for 'er slacking.. just meet down at the port tomorrow mornin'.. we'll be leavin' after supplies are onboard."
"Perfect, mate." I give him a big goldtoothed grin. "Thanks very much." I clap my hands together and make a slight bow toward him.
Before we continue down into the town, I decide it's probably a good idea to have some company.. I'm not in the mood to act like the property of my captain infront of the locals. If this new guy comes along, he'll get sidetracked with business-talk.. I hope. "You should join us for a drink." I suggest, quickly.. "T' celebrate the arrangement.." "Uh.. yeh. That sounds like a g' idea, tell me about yerself as we walk, boy." The captain orders Jack, as they start to head off.
Not in a position to refuse, I shrug and go with 'em. "Got stranded in this shithole after havin' enough of the ship I served on before. Merchant sailors, they were. Honest men. Got on me nerves t' be tellin' the truth." I grin.
