"Just a few more, then you can walk around if you like. We'll need you to stay near by in case my supervisor has any more questions. Alright, so can you describe Officer Sands' demeanor when you first approached him? Did he seem metally stable, in the midst of a breakdown, calm, ready to give up or not wanting to give up?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile....
Nurses took blood samples from Sands and took them to the lab to be processed when he had first arrived. The Doctors came back with the results, pleased that the drugs that had been pumped through his system had disapated without any lasting side effects. The Doctors then took Sands back into the O.R. to do some reconstructive surgery on his eye sockets.
"Not wanting to give up definitley, he doesnt seem like the kinda of person who would ask for help normally, does he?" Selina shifted in her chair, trying to think back to what he said to her when she first met him, "He was also very angry, but definitley mentally stable. He was full of holes, bleeding to death in a back alley in Mexico and he still managed to threaten me and then explain in great detail why I should help him," She took another sip of water. "I dont know what he's like normally so I cant really compare. I'm sorry if it's no use to you,"
"He has always been very defiant, he does things by the book, but yet... twists it to his own means and purposes. He's always walking the line between following our rules and well, going renegade, or sometimes we call it going cowboy." Officer Anderson confirmed, "You're correct in assuming he never asks for help unless he is desperate, which is rare. He is a master manipulator, incredibly smart. He has two Masters and a Bachelor's. A masters in Human Psychology and Criminal Psychology, and a Bachelor's in Sociology. Yet, he himself could be called sociopathic, or at least exibits sociopathic tendencies. We will have to see how being blind effects him." He added. Officer Anderson paused, seemingly looking over his notes, then cleared his throat.
"We'll want you to stay around for a while. You were the first person he put a smidge of trust in since being blinded, for him that's a huge deal. Depending on how he reacts, you may be the only one he trusts for a while. He's very vunerable right now although he'll deny it forever."
"How longs a while? All of my things are in Mexico, my clothes, my money, my camera ..." Selina had to admit when Officer Anderson said Sands trusted her, even just a smidgen, after all since she'd met him Sands had done nothing but moan and swear at her. But then again, it was be very interesting to see the inside of the CIA and she hadnt exactly had anything better planned for the holiday, Mexico hadnt turned out exactly how she'd imagined.
"I'm not sure how long, really it all depends on Officer Sands. We have an Officer in Mexico right now retreaving Officer Sands' belongings. Give me the name of the hotel and address if you know it, and I will phone our Officer and tell him to retreave your things as well. More likely than not, we will have you move in with Officer Sands at his personal residence. We'll have your things sent there and if you haven't yet paid for your hotel, we will take care of it for you." Officer Anderson told her as his cell phone rang, "Just a moment." He appologised then answered his phone. His conversation was quiet and brief. After ending the call he turned to Selina, "That was the Doctor taking care of Officer Sands. He's out of O.R. and coming to. He's slightly disoriented, but he remembers you and is asking for you."
Selina gave Officer Anderson the address of the hotel and her room number.
A few minutes later a nurse from the hospital came and led her across to Sands room. Selina cautiously pushed the door open, not knowing what to expect. Sands was lying in the bed, bandages still wrapped across his face but they were clean and no longer covered in blood. "Hello Jeff," She said quietly, she didnt think now was the time to wind him up about his name. "How are you feeling?" She walked around and stood by the side of his bed.
Sands had been laying back against the pillows when Selina walked in. When he heard his name, he slightly lifted his head turning his ear towards the voice.
"How are you feeling?" a gentle female english voice asked.
"Selina..." Sands said, as if remembering, as he sat upright, "I think it finally hit me that I'm not ever going to be able to see... I don't even know what you look like... and they tell me I'll need to go into physical therapy, learn how to read braille, how to use..." Sands trailed off, scowling and taking a deep sigh before continuing, "How to use a fucking cane. Maybe looking into getting a guide dog. Fucking bastards." Sands cursed, "Are you still by the door? Come in." Sands said suddenly, reaching out to see if she was already near by.
Selina reach out and took his hand, squeezing it gently to let him know where she was. "I know I have no idea what you're going through, but I'll be here to help you ... if you want my help that is," She felt so awkward, she had no idea what she was supposed to say to him. "And about what I look like... you're not missing out on much, trust me," She laughed trying to lighten the mood. "Browny red hair, light brown eyes, pale skin. Nothing special," She reached across and pulled a chair closer to his bed and sat down, still holding onto his hand without realising it.
"Yeah...I'd ah... I think... I think I'm gonna need... all the, the help I can get. You know?" Sands said accepting her offer for help, "So you don't think you're much of a looker eh? I... Why don't you let me be the judge of that? If you don't mind. One of the many things I need to practice." Sands Smirked.
"Just for the sake of practise, I dont want you getting any ideas," Selina smirked and then guided his hands to her face. She closed her eyes and let him feel what she looked like. It was a weird sensation, she thought, having to let someone touch you to see what you looked like. It wasnt something she'd ever really given a lot of thought before. She hadnt had to, Sands was the first blind person she'd ever met before, of course she'd seen some in the streets in London with their guide dogs but she'd never actually thought to see if they wanted any help. It was an eyeopener, for a lack of a better metaphor.
