"Alright, Les." David walked over and gave the quarter back to Racetrack that Les had stuck in his pocket. "Sorry, Race." He took Les by the ear and carefully led him over to Jack. "Ready to go?" Jack nodded. David released Les and led the trio out into the emptying streets. As they got closer to David's apartment, he remembered that he wasn't supposed to be there. "Dang it, Jack! I can't go home! My folks are expecting me to be at school! He stopped in the middle of the street where a man pushing his cart of apples nearly ran into him. "Excuse me," he said to the man, picking up the dropped apples. "What am I gonna do, Jack?"

David sighed, feeling foolish. He took Les home and then turned back to the Newsboys Lodging with Jack. "So, you got a lotta faith that this strike will work. Where does that come from? I don't understand how you can be so optimistic about a strike!" "Oh! And this year! No soakin' other kids! Really! I know that its like a sport to you, but we can't do it! It'll give us newsies a bad name!" David fell in stride with Jack.

"Well, as long as the beatings are kept to a minimum. I don't think that we'll have much support if we beat up the other newsies, y'know?" As they walked up to the porch of the Newsboys Lodging, David stopped. "You live here? That's pretty nice." They walked inside, David looking around, slightly worried. He didn't like it when the other newsies made fun of him, and he hoped that they would just let him sleep in peace. He had a long day ahead of him, and lots more thinking to do. "So, Jack," he said trying to act cool, "Where do ye sleep?"

((yep..dormitory is what i'd call it!)) David looked around at all the beds and boys running around the room. There were paper airplanes of that day's issue flying through the air, balls being thrown back and forth, and through it all, and older man laughing at them. "Who's that," David whispered in Jack's ear, ducking as a baseball flew past his head.

David walked over and shook hands with Racetrack (the newsies’ way). Racetrack showed him all of his winnings at the poker game, and David listened with amusement. David turned at the sound of a squeal and saw Crutchy hopping around on his good leg. Apparently someone had taken his crutch again. David ran over to Crutchy and helped him to a chair. Crutchy thanked him and waited for his thieves to finish their prank. He was quite used to having his crutch stolen out from under him. He laughed as they mocked the way that Crutchy walked. David came back to Racetrack and watched as he continued to show off his winnings.
