Alaura nodded, still speechless. She didn't know what to say. As soon as Beckett left, she turned to her mother in shock, "Mother, why didn't you tell me about this sooner? I...I had no idea!"
Trying to hold the tears back, she said, "Aren't you suppose to marry someone you love? I thought that was what marriage was all about."

Alaura frowned. She always thought that her parents loved each other. Now, she wasn't so certain. Alaura asked her mother, "But...you and father always seem to get along well! You...you don't love each other? And how do we expand the family name if I become Alaura Beckett?"

"I never said I loved him", Emily said. "I'm just fond of him."
Emily sat down next to Alaura.
"We're expanding the family name by joining the other family. In a few weeks you're going to be Alaura Hailey von Salmanca-Beckett."

"But...but wasn't there someone that you did love?" Alaura asked, horrified. How could her mother not love her father? Married people were suppose to love each other more than anything else!
"So...so I'm going to have to marry Lord Beckett then?" Alaura asked again. "Will I have to have children?" She frowned at this thought.

"No", Emily answered. "My parents always paired me with your father. I never knew any other men. Of course you'll have to have children! You are a woman. It's your duty. You have to expand the family name!"

"Never? You never knew any other men?" Alaura was horrified. How could you only know one man for your whole life? That sounded miserable. And at her mother's words about children, Alaura was even more stunned. She stuttered, "But...but what if I don't want to have children yet? I'm still quite young..."

"You have no choice", Emily said. "I'm not going to be there to take care of you anymore. You're going to have to do what Lord Beckett says. If he wants children you must give him children. It is your duty as a woman and a wife."
She stood up to leave.
"I will speak no more of it."

No choice? The words seemed to echo around in Alaura's mind. She couldn't believe what was happening. She felt like a slave. She had no choice in this at all and had absolutely no freedom anymore. She wanted to run away. Tears filled her eyes, but she pushed them back.
Before her mother could leave, she asked quietly, "What time is dinner tonight?"

She walked off leaving Alaura alone.
