Alaura von Salmanca sat on a bench by the window, waiting for her best friend, Elizabeth Swann, to come visit. Elizabeth was going to bring her friend, James Norrington, along as well. Alaura had never met James before and had done her best to look good for this new stranger. She had on a new dress, a pretty necklace, and had her hair done up in a perfect bun. As Alaura sat by the window, she heard a voice behind her.
"Alaura, dear?" her father asked. "Your mother and I have some news for you. Please come sit on the couch with us." Alaura's father watched her apprehensively. He wasn't sure how she was going to take the news.
Having no idea what her father wanted to tell her, Alaura raised her eyebrows at him and silently went over to sit on the couch between him and her mother. Once she sat down, she asked, "What is this news you wanted to tell me?"

"Your father and I have canceled your playdate with Elizabeth. We decided to take you up to the Fort tonight", Emily von Salmanca said. "There is a party celebrating the arrival of the new Sargeant. I have to get you ready for tonight. I know you wanted to spend time with Elizabeth today, but she will be there too!"

Alaura thought about this for a minute and then smile, "Okay! I love visiting the Fort! Who is the new Sargeant?" Alaura jumped to her feet and danced around the room.
"I can't wait to see Lizzy! We will have so much fun together! What must I do to get ready for the occasion?" Alaura's eyes sparkled happily. She loved going to the Fort and she loved seeing her friend just as much.

Emily took Alaura upstairs to her room.
"First off, we must do something with your hair. A silly bun is far too plain for a party."
Emily took her hair out of the bun and started brushing.
"After this, you will change out of this dress and into something more proper for a party."

Alaura watched as her mother brushed her long, thick hair. She liked having her hair brushed. It always felt nice and her mother always managed to do something beautiful with it.
Alaura thought about a different dress and asked her mother, "What dress should I wear to the party?" She hesitated for a moment and then asked another question she was dying to ask, "Will there be lots of children at the party? I would love to make more friends!"

"Children?" Emily asked. "Absolutely not. This is a party for only the important citizens. Elizabeth is the governor's daughter, so she'll be there. Your father is the judge of Port Royal, so we'll be going."
She put her hands on Alaura's shoulders.
"Do not embarass us tonight, young lady."

Alaura's face fell when she realized there would be no children at the occasion. Meeting new people was one of her favorite things. She asked, "But what if the important citizens have children? Will they come along with their parents like Lizzy and me?"
And at her mother's statement, she nodded gravely and replied, "Don't worry mother; I would never embarrass you."

"The children who are younger than you do not attend these parties. They stay at home with their nannies because they are much too immature. They will cause ruckus and embarassment to their parents."
Emily took a clip and started putting Alaura's hair up.
"Young women your age are responsible young ladies. They know how to behave."
When Emily was done with her hair, she went to Alaura's wardrobe looking for a dress.
"Change your dress. Your father and I will be getting ready."

Alaura frowned, but didn't say anymore regarding the children. Secretly, she hoped there would be a few attending the party. Alaura's only friend was Elizabeth.
When her mother gave her the dress, Alaura took it and asked, "Will we be going to the party as soon as I have changed the dress?"
Alaura was anxious to go to the party. It had been a while since she had been to a party. And it had also been a while since she had seen Lizzy.

"We will go when your father and I are ready."
Emily walked out of Alaura's room and into hers and Derek's.
*Timeskip*
"I hope you're ready, Alaura!" Emily said. "We don't want to be late!"
