Mystique caught Jean's gaze, "Thanks," She mumbled, and hell, she meant it. She looked back down at Logan. The others gradually filtered from the room, going back to get on with their lives. Mystique stayed with Logan, she'd stay with him as long as it would take. She wouldn't move from this spot until he woke up ... or didn't. She was nervous for when Lucy would come home from school. The sight of her daddy was going to terrify the little girl. She didn't want Lucy to watch her daddy die.

Unfortunately, Logan didn't regain conciousness before Lucy arrived home from school. The little girl ran through the front door and bounced up the stairs, looking for her mummy or daddy, whoever was home first. She was really excited, because she didn't get teased at school today. Not once! Her daddy had been right, punching did help, and Lucy was excited to tell him and mummy all about it. Lucy ran into the lounge happily when she saw her mummy's blonde hair over the back of the couch. "Mummy, mummy, guess what?!" She squealed. But as she ran around the sofa, Lucy came to an stop at the sight of her daddy. Her eyes grew wide, and her schoolbag fell to the ground as she started to scream.

Mystique leaned over the side of the sofa without disturbing Logan. She grabbed Lucy's wrist, spun her around and wrapped her arms around the little girl. "Shhh, daddy's going to be fine," She said, telling herself she wasn't lying to Lucy, just being optimistic. "He just had an accident at the construction site," She let go of Lucy and turned her to face her, "Now what were you going to tell me?"

Lucy's eyes were huge, she didn't look at her mummy but at her daddy, who looked really pale and sick and asleep. The bandages on his head and shoulder were already stained with blood again. Tears welled up in Lucy's eyes. She was afraid all of the sudden, really afraid, and she started to cry. She moved as close to her mummy as she dared to, burying her little face in her shoulder. Her excitement about not being teased was completely forgotten.

Mystique wrapped her arms around Lucy, tightly embracing the little girl. "Daddy's a big boy, Luce," Mystique mumbled, trying to convince herself as much as Lucy. "He won't give up on us easily, I promise you. He'll fight for us, just you see," She brushed a kiss in Lucy's mass of tangled blonde hair and let the little girl cry on her shoulder as much as she needed to.

Lucy cried for what seemed like forever. Eventually she rubbed her eyes, sobbing as she looked at her daddy again, "He looks so scary mummy.." She whimpered, really frightened.

Mystique gave Lucy a nod. "I know he does now, but he'll get better, then he'll look like daddy again," She wiped the tears from Lucy's cheek with her thumb. "Why don't you go sit with Aurora, and tell Marie I told you to ask her to cut you a big slice of chocolate cake with extra ice cream?" She said, partly trying to cheer the little girl up, and partly trying to stop her looking at her daddy in this state.

Lucy nodded, shaking with fear as she pulled away from her mummy's embrace. She gave her daddy a kiss on the tip of his nose - the only part that wasn't blood-covered or bandaged, before she fled the room quickly.

Mystique bit her bottom lip when Lucy so sweetly kissed her daddy's nose. "Oh God," She whispered, as soon as Lucy left. Mystique leaned her head against the back of the sofa and closed her eyes, dreading the time when she'd have to explain to Lucy that her daddy died.

Another few hours passed. It became dark outside, and by and by the mansion became quiet as people went to sleep. Lucy stopped by the room once more, with Marie, to wish her mummy a goodnight. Marie promised she'd stay with the children tonight and they left again. Then, a few minutes passed midnight, Logan stirred. He groaned, barely audible, and a slight frown came to his features.
