Her laughter sounded fake to him though, but a smirk was triggered to appear on his face nonetheless. Not the laughter, but her words were the cause of it though. He stepped closer still, bluntly put his hand under her chin and lifted it up slightly so her eyes were forced to meet his. For the first time, cos she had been avoiding to look straight into his eyes. He had noticed it. And he wanted to see why. He could hear the Governor gasp and sputter some protest in the background as the 'pirate' dared to touch this 'lady', but he paid it no mind at all. He didn't answer her question, but held her gaze fixed by piercing her eyes with his own intense stare. Dark, mysterious.. everything that verified the mystery of Capt'n Jack Sparrow. He was more interested in *her* though. And he grinned slightly as he saw the very shimmer of rebellion that he had seen long before. Not bursting and raging flames like he had seen when she had been a pirate. But mild, dimmed, and definately there.. like he had seen just after he had 'kidnapped' her from the Slave Plantation. She didn't change. At least not to him. Of course, he hadn't been there in ten years.
He failed to answer her question, but instead countered it with one of his own. "Since when in this lifetime do you side with them Navy, eh Scarlett?" He raised an eyebrow curiously. It was hardly noticable, but deep inside of him a little fickle doubt was playing; he didn't *trust* the situation.

Scarlett wasn't a girl anymore, and she could stand her ground much better than before, she had more control over her facial expressions, over what her face would betray and what would stay hidden in the depth of her eyes, but she couldn't control the goosebumps on her skin, when he touched her so unexpectedly, lifting her face, so that they would look into each other's eyes.
She knew him a bit. No, she didn't know *him*, but she knew his habits, but this touch was too unexpected. She hadn't been prepared for it and, when their eyes locked, she blinked and looked away. Scarlett couldn't look into his eyes and blamed herself for it immediately, for it was a sign of weakness, at least she considered it to be.
Regaining her balance, she - herself - looked into his eyes. Dark brown and deep emerald - locked. Betraying nothing to each other. She had had a very good teacher who had taught her to hide her emotions. Her teacher was staring right into her eyes now and she was staring into his.
"It might seem that I change sides too often, but in fact, I never change sides", - she challenged him, but it didn't mean that she had stayed 'loyal' to pirates, and she was sure Jack understood it. - "The only side I stick to", - Scarlett grinned, - "is my own".

At that he smiled, a genuine smile. "Goo' girl." He said, but only in a mumble so it would be hard for even her to hear it despite the small distance between them. Then he let go of her, stepping back slightly. "Now tell me, luv. What *really* brought me here?" He wondered, asking her directly about her intentions. He wanted to know *why* she had urged the Navy to contact him. He was relatively sure that the Navy's problems they wrote about were genuine, the Governor's shock only confirmed that. But he doubted that it was just 'good will' on Scarlett's account. He hadn't forgot: there was more to this girl than met the eye. He was also sure she wouldn't say the truth. But he hoped that the little knowladge he still had about this girl, and maybe a flicker of doubt on her account could tell him more than any spoken word could.

Even though 10 years had passed, Scarlett believed that she could still recognize genuine smiles of Jack, and she also believed that the one she had just seen was one of those. They were rare and, therefore, priceless. No, they *would* be priceless, if she still cared. And if not - genuine or not, it made no difference. At all.
And, however, she heard his words that had been said in a mumble. "Now tell me, Jack", - Scarlett smirked, - "why would I open up my intentions to you?" She glanced at the Governor: "They need your help, that's why they ask you too cooperate. And me? Think that it was just a coincidence, if you want", - Scarlett chuckled. - "Or think that I *did* miss you and therefore decided to arrange a meeting, if it flatters you. But also keep in mind, which I am sure you will", - she grinned, - "that both of these explanations are no more than lies".

"Keep tellin' yourselves that darlin'." He winked at her, a roguish and boyish wink. Whatever she told him though, he knew not to believe anything he didn't see with his own two eyes. He long learnt not to *trust* anyone. Especially not anyone he hadn't seen.. in ten years. Despite the fact that she was the one (the only one) he used to trust most, right now she could've been any other enemy and he would've given her the same 'credit'. None at all.
"Now then," He said, "Very well... I'll have another drink, mate." He waved at the Governor dismissively, more or less telling him to pour another round of Scotch. "If ye please." He grinned, knowing the Governor wouldn't refuse anyway for the sake of good manner and hospitality.

His wink unsettled her, threw her off-balance and off-guard for a moment, because, well, she found it easier when they were distant. Because they *were* distant: hadn't seen each other for 10 years and had nothing in common anymore. Nothing, but the past, which was only the past, nothing more than that. Right?
"Me too", - she sat down into an armchair, giving a grin to the Governor, who was too shocked to say anything in return. - "Good old Scotch", - Scarlett rolled her eyes, most of all - at herself. She didn't know what had gotten into her, why she behaved like that and, more importantly, what she was aiming at.
Right now she was scaring the poor Governor, ruining her chances of marrying his nephew, ruining her newly restored and carefully built reputation. Also, she was playing strange word-games with the man she had loved more than anyone else. What for? She didn't know.
Just for the sake of it. Carpe diem.

Soon as we're both seated the Governor had already poored our drinks, and picked up mine and swigged it down like I did with the other two. The alcohol warms me from inside, fills an empty stomach (hadn't had time to eat yet since our arrival, in fact) and somehow seems to make the whole scene less absurd. I suppose that's what you call it when you're long-lost-bonny-what's-her-name reappears from the past, eh?
"I eh.." The Governor looked inbetween the two, hesitant. "Miss Scarlett.. may I ask how exactly you became aquinted with captain Sparrow?"
"Oh ask her." I encourage with a golden grin flashed in Scarlett's direction teasingly. "Tis a good story, eh luv?" I lean back in my chair and put my boots on the desk casually.

I take a deep breath and pour the whole glass of Scotch into my throat - it burns, and it burns much, since I hadn't drunk anything stronger than wine or champagne for a long time, but I remind myself that I had been a pirate, and not a bad one. I don't cringe, even though the Scotch is utterly disgusting. If anyone asked me what I was doing it all for, I would eagerly send them to hell, because I honestly don't know. I might know why Jack is here, but I truly have no idea what I am trying to show them by this performance.
However, I find everything amusing. Especially with some alcohol in my system, that is.
"That's a very complicated story", - I smirk at the Governor. - "And a really old one, as well. But, also, a greatly interesting one, I have to admit", - I add and glance at Jack, sideways. I can't believe he's here... it's surreal, absurd, incredible. And yet, it's real.
"You better ask him, because it was him who kidnapped me", - I chuckle. - "But then everything got even more complicated".

Glancing sideways, I meet her eyes for a split second. Mine are reflecting a mischievious twinkle at the time. Perhaps I realize that she hasn't got the situation fully under her control either.. whatever triggers it; I don't feel too uncomfortable at the time. She might have something up her sleeve, might have a wicked plan ahead of me, but I'm not walking into it with eyes wide open. That I swear to myself.
"Kidnapped?" The governor asks, pressing the matter.
"You make it sound so bad." I don't take my eyes of Scarlett. "I like to see it as doing a little favour to release a damsel from her golden cage." I turn my gaze to the Governor now. "Charity, really." I say, but it's just to tease Scarlett. I don't care what *he* thinks or concludes.

I smirk to myself, finding this situation highly entertaining and, what's even more important, absolutely comfortable for me. I expected everything to be much more difficult, but now something makes it all easier - maybe it's alcohol, maybe it's just my determination to do everything right, not to spoil anything and not to ruin my chances.
"Aye, kidnapped", - I confirm, with a nod to the Governor. - "Kidnapped. Threatened with a pistol, even. Don't trust him, not even for a moment", - I say, but I know that it's more of a joke from my side. I have to admit that I trusted him and that he proved himself to be trustworthy. Enough for a pirate, couldn't expect more than that, after all.
"Don't you tell me about charity", - I smirk. Somehow it's going much smoother and it scares me. There should have been more tension between us - at least that was what I was getting prepared to. - "You're a pirate, a liar, a smuggler, a scallywag".
And that's what I loved you for.
