Jack was snoring mildly next to Penny. He'd slept in brigs before; it wasn't as though he wasn't used to it whatsoever. He rolled over, hitting something, immediately waking up with a small yelp in the process.

'oh, okay. Thank you' she nodded at him, didn't even consider having some breakfast first and went to the captain's quarters straight away. She knocked on his door, assuming he would be in their and not at the helm.

Melchior looked up as Serena entered the room and he stood from his chair at the desk, "I've been up all night trying to read these passages and make any sense of them." he mumbled to her, holding up a book, "I thought that you could have a try."

'huh.. that's a waste of perfectly good sleep' she mumbled, walking over 'what am I looking at?' she asked, wondering what he had been eager to read, that she could help him with.. after all she was 'only' a cartographer.

"Some old captain's logs that mention the route. They just seem to jump from one conclusion to the next and not one of them has the same details. It's like they all passed entirely different waters."

'hm, that's odd...I highly doubt that that is possible, unless the ocean was cursed and changed or something' she laughed 'cursed water, like that is possible' she mumbled, taking the book from him. She knew damn well what this part of the sea contained. Her guess was that many of the captains were already dazzled by the siren song by the time they wrote things down properly, and had difficulty keeping track of time 'I'll study it and give it back when I know what is going on...or do you need it right away?' she wondered, since he had stayed up all night to deceipher it.

"The sooner the better, I want to know what we're heading into.. before we head into it." He passed her a pile of 3 old, broken books.

‘Right, of course’ Serena nodded, took the books and headed out the door. She went back to her own cabin and sat down. ‘Dang it’ she mumbled ‘can’t wait for this play-pretend to be over so I can go back to my normal day job… of being a Queen’ she grinned at the thought of that and day dreamed for a few minutes. Then she snapped out of it and with a sigh she started reading the logbooks.
3rd November We’re heading North, via South. It was not an easy decision but I have to follow my instincts. Here the map is useless, here things are different. North is the way to go.
6th November We headed North, only to stumble upon a graveyard of rocks. Out of nowhere they came up, but we’re nowhere near shore. The sea is betraying us, we’re going to follow the map again..
10th December We’re lost at sea. Thousands of kilometres of water around us, our food is running low. We cannot rely on any map. The waters here are different. I ordered my crew to follow the ladies in the water, but I’m afraid they have blinded me. Nothing good can come of following ladies at sea.
Serena frowned ‘ladies at sea’ she mumbled, wondering what he was talking about. It couldn’t have been sirens, mermaids perhaps…
15th December The women keep calling us. They float around, ghostlike almost, weeping, talking of murder. I am captivated and am convinced they can lead me to Australis Incognito. They spoke to me, they said they knew everything, and they just needed to tell someone about it. I am the one that they told. The crew wishes to return to England, but I refuse to bring the ship around, we have come this far..
Serena took the second logbook and started reading it from broken cover to .. well it didn’t have a back really.. Near the end of the logbook she noticed an interesting entry
27th March The ship is surrounded by small sea creatures, green, duck-like feet, tiny, with big eyes. Thousands of them. They jump up, reach out and try to grab the crew and drag them into the water. We had to drop anchor, and have to wait for this plague to pass in order to continue West.
1st April I lost most of my crew, it is down to the first mate and two crewmembers. The sea creatures took them all. Once they hit the water the dragged them away, far into the deep.
‘Looks like these waters are indeed haunted’ she mumbled. She had only recently taken over the job of Blaeu. She had no idea that this was known about the waters too… She took a book out of her suitcase and flipped through it. ‘Just as I thought.. Grindylows and Rusalka’s’ she mumbled.
By the end of the day, when the sky had turned dark already, Serena knocked on Melchior’s door, not waiting for him to answer she walked in. She dumped the three logbooks on his desk and added her own book which read Ocean Creatures ‘These waters are hunted al right’ she told him.
In the meanwhile, right above the brig, an unexpecting crewmember was leaning over the rail, staring into the water. Before he knew it, a long blue arm reached all the way up to the ship, grabbed the crewmember by his collar and threw him overboard. From inside the brig a clear screaming could be heard, as a blue man-like sea creature tore him apart.

Jack passed the time making faces at the sleeping guards.

Melchior jumped slightly as she entered in such a fashion.. he looked up from some work of fiction, sitting on the side of his bed. He stood as she spoke.. "Haunted? That's barely a technical term." He frowned.
"Did you hear that?" Penny muttered, her first words in hours, "I heard a splash outside. Something strange."
