Roux didn't keep his gaze on hers though. He looked away to the shopwindow, and hesitated. He thought about telling her about everything that happened. Why they, the riverpeople, had reason to steer clear from anybody else these days - rather than just the other way around.
"Vianne," He started, still avoiding eyecontact. "You shouldn't worry. It's just that Zezette, and I.." He paused. Staring into the dark, he frowned a little.
He couldn't do it. God damn it. He couldn't tell her. His friends, they trusted in his loyalty. They trusted that the secret would remain unspoken of. Even the confusion and hint of pain in Vianne's eyes - his former love - couldn't change this.
"..It's just complicated."

"what is complicated?" she asked "Roux, why did you come here?" She moved away from the wall, closer to him "You and Zezette what ? Are you.. are you married to her or something ? Is that what you came here for? to tell me that ?" Vianne shook her head, completely lost. She had been in love with this man, for as short a period is took she had loved him, he had managed to liven her life up, to win her over with his simplicity and fair eyes. And now.. a stranger stood across from her, unwilling to open up and enlighten her. "listen, it is late.. maybe you should come back tomorrow or.. any other day you do feel like explaining what it up. This is just confusing. Anouk was so confused this afternoon. It will not do her any good" she said, using Anouk as an excuse, she damn well knew that she meant herself. She did not feel like besides going through a difficult time without magic in a new dead town to also go through an emotional rollercoaster.

When Vianne stepped closer, Roux was urged to take a step back himself. But he had his back against the counter, so he couldn't. He just stood there watching her approach. And as she did, he found it harder not to see that woman from the past, that woman he cared for so much in such a short amount of time. It was hard not to remember how things had been before. Don't come closer, or I'll have to go. He thought.
He didn't want to upset her. But he couldn't tell her either. "I'm not with Zezette." He eventually said, refinding a certain grip of himself. "Vianne.. I came to say that I can't be here. I can't come back into your life." He paused, "...I wish I could, but things changed. But I did miss you. Still do. So I don't want you to think I would avoid you... if I had a choice. That's all."

Vianne could not help but to feel a certain relief when Roux told her he was not together with Zezette. Even though it was not her place to feel that way, and perhaps Zezette was a really nice girl once she would not be so afraid of people as she had been of her and Anouk earlier, Vianne felt envy for Zezette. She had the privilege of being around Roux 24/7. The only man that Vianne felt close to could only be with her for a short time and then had to leave her. It did not feel right in her heart, but she had no choice to give in and let him go. He would be back.. one day.. or so he said. And what was this about missing her and than acting this way? Had she ever given him a reason not to trust her with anything ? "Y-you can not come back into my life?" she finally broke the silence and stepped away from him, turning her back towards him and taking a deep breath. She had not expected this to come out of his mouth. Yes, men had left her before, she was unconventional and she knew it, but to hear it from him.. "I don't know why.. what I did to make you feel this hostile to wards me, but I'm sorry for making you feel that way" she spoke up, getting a bit of her old nerve back.

"Vianne.." Roux started, looking at her back as she kept her stance turned away from him. Jesus. He'd done it anyway. He'd upset her though he never intended to. "...Listen. Vianne." He was the one to approach her now, eventhough it felt as if there was a field of tension around them. A field that seemed to increase in strenght the nearer her got to her. "You didn't do anything. There's just something that I can't tell you. And it's in the way of me being here in the first place. We can't risk any.. familiary with town folk. It's hard to explain." He frowned, and then laid his hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry."

She felt goosebumps appear on her arms when he laid his hand on her shoulder, Vianne closed her bathrobe and hugged herself. "Town folk?" she smirked a little, unamused "Is that what we are to you Roux?" She turned around, staring into his eyes, really really not understanding what was going on. "you say there's something that keeps you from coming here, yet you are here... what am I supposed to think of that?" she wondered honestly "it certainly would have been easier if you'd just leave without saying anything, I mean..what am I going to tell Anouk now? Sorry but Roux has problems and doesn't feel like being with town people.." she sighed, disappointed in everything, in him. If he had a problem she wanted to help, she was just the kind of person you could go to with problems, she could help..why didn't he know that?

"I'm here cos I couldn't stay away without saying anything, Vianne." Roux told her, his hand stll resting on her shoulder. "I just wanted you to know I'm sorry. That's all. I don't want you to think it's your fault or something."

"alright" Vianne said, feeling as if someone had just beaten her down. "I think you made your point, quite clearly" she mumbled and walked over to the door, her hand on the doorknob. "What I don't understand though.." she couldn't help herself but to bring it up again. She had to tell him, and more importantly, she was too curious and wanted to know what was up. "You know me.. you know that I am the last person in the world who would judge anyone, let alone you. Why can't you trust me now ? What changed over these few months that you feel like you have to shut me out?" She leaned against the door now, diverting her eyes to the ceiling "For god sakes Roux, you are the only good friend I have in the world and you force me to stay away from you and let you stir in your own problems?"

"This is something you can't solve, Vianne." Roux walked over to her, and paused at the door. "I know you wouldn't judge. I know I can trust you. But this is something I can't tell you, cos I'd just put a weight on your shoulders that you don't want. It's not about trust.. it's about not wanting to put it on you."

Vianne was at a loss for words. So she couldn't help, she could only sit back and watch the one man she cares for steer out of her life again? She sighed a little and cursed inwardly is this the punishment you're giving me ? Ignoring my true self for the better and what does the northwind give me ? More trouble? "Just be careful" She said, opening the door for him. There was nothing else she could do or say to make him change his mind of make him want to stay near her so she best leave him alone then..for now.
