With a slow creak, followed by a dull clank, the doors to Serenity lowered to form a gang plank from the ship. Mal, Captain Malcolm Reynolds stepped out and onto the dusty land of Beaumonde. It'd been weeks since they'd set foot on land and were in desperate need off supplies (and money!). "Kaylee, you know what to do," Mal ordered his ship's mechanic.
"Yes, Captain," Kaylee answered with a big grin and a skip as she set up her deck chair and colourful umbrella to wait for a passenger or two to pass by.
"Zoe, Jayne, with me," Mal waved a hand over his shoulder, gesturing for the pair to walk with him. "The rest of you, meet back here by nightfall. And Simon, keep an eye on that sister of yours, we don't want any trouble here, there may be Alliance around,"

"On my way, Sir," Zoe replied as she walked down the gangplank "any specifics on where we are going?" She looked at her Captain in anticipation, wondering whether there was a specific reason for them to be back at Beamonde.
Simon smiled as he watched Kaylee set up her seat. With a hint of embarrassment he thought back at the night they spend drunk in the bar at Canton. It was the closest he ever got at letting her know how he feels. Mal's voice draws him back to reality. "ehm.. yes, of course" he mumbles, faking a smile. As if he would ever consider bringing his sister in danger. No, the chance of bumping into the Alliance on Beaumonde was too big. Instead of exploring town, he would rather see that River would stay safe and on the ship this time. Plus, that would give him the opportunity to spend some more 'off-duty' time with Kaylee.

"The Maidenhead," Mal told his first mate as he strode across the land towards the bar. "We're going to see Fanty and Mingo."
Kaylee sat in her fold out chair, legs crossed underneath her, twirling her umbrella above her head. She looked back at Simon, when she felt his presence lingering behind her. "Not going into town?" She asked with a smile. "I can make sure River doesn't wander off if you'd like," She offered, not trying to get rid of him at all, she'd much prefer to have Simon's company, but she wasn't about to admit that to him.

Zoe frowned. The twin brothers weren't her first choice of people to work with, as their jobs usually mean trouble. Not entirely sure but with good faith that her captain knows what he is doing she follows him towards the bar.
“No, it's all right,” he smiled, now sincerely “I'll stay here and keep an eye on her myself”. With a smile on his face his eyes lock into hers for a second. “It's not that I don't trust you with her” he then immediately added, suddenly afraid she would misinterpret his words. “River really likes you, and I'm sure you would do a great job looking out for her, it's just that I.. ehm..”. Lost for words Simon stops mid-sentence. How is it that she always manages to bring him out of balance? “I rather stay here. With you. And .. Wash. And the ship.” he stumbled, while his smile turned into an awkward and somewhat confused expression.

Mal walked straight across to the twins while Zoe and Jayne kept 'guard'. He sat down, and had a short conversation lasting no longer than five minutes. The twins passed him a sheet of paper, which the Captain folded up and slipped inside his coat pocket. Not long after they entered, Mal strode back over to Zoe and Jayne. "We have a job," He told them.
Kaylee smiled when he started speaking 'with her', but the smile quickly fell when he added the others. "Oh. Right ... of course," She forced a smile. She fell into an awkward silence. "River's probably better off with you looking out for her anyway." She added to break the silence.

Zoe smiled a small encouraging smile. "It was about time, Sir" It had been a while since their last job, and supplies were starting to run low. She might not always trust the twins too much, but right now a job is a job and she knew that. She looked at her Captain, thinking he probably thought the same. "So what is our next step?"
Uncertain of how to reply, Simon just gave her an awkward smile. The moment he stumbled out the others' names he could see the expression on Kaylee's face change, and he regretted it immediately. Once again his attempts to be a gentleman had the opposite effect of what he had hoped for. He had added the others not to embarrass her or put pressure on her company, but instead he managed to fill the air with awkward tension.
He scraped his throat, not sure how to proceed from here. His gaze wandered off and fell onto the ship where River stood in the opening to the lower deck/ cargo space, lightly swinging from side to side with her eyes closed, taking in the sun they had been missing for weeks in a row now. The expression on his face softened at the sight of his sister in peace like this. With renewed calmness he looked back at Kaylee. "Are you looking forward having new guests on board?" he asked her, attempting to change the topic and clear the air.

"Wash should be resupplying Serenity. We'll leave tonight." Mal told them. "We'll be relieving some Alliance ships of their cargo." He said with a smug smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. It was no secret how much he loved snatching Alliance supplies out from under their noses.
"Oh yes!" Kaylee said with a grin. "I love having new people on board. So many new stories!" she told him, gaze watching the people walk past. "Are you?"

Zoe looked at her Captain and grinned at his expression. She knew how much he enjoyed playing tricks on the Alliance. She glanced at Jayne who was also walking around with a content smirk already, probably thinking of the many ways he could thwart the Alliance's plans. She shook her head at the two man, but couldn't resist to let a little smirk shine through either.
"That will probably depend on who it is we'll take with us" Simon replied, glancing at River - who had now raised he arms above her head and played with the sunlight coming through between her fingers. At least with Inara he knew they were safe.

Mal smirked at Zoe's own smirk. He waved a hand at the bar tender and ordered three drinks for himself and his crew. He sat down at a table. He laid down the piece of paper that the twins had given him, a map of the alliance ships route. "We'll intercept their route," He told Zoe and Jayne. "Put out a distress call, get them to come to us,"
Kaylee followed Simon's gaze to River. "Don't worry. The Captain's a great judge of character,"

Zoe nodded in understanding as her Captain started explaining their next steps.
"Hmmm.." Simon replied, half in agreement and half worried thinking back at all the 'interesting' people he had met since boarding Serenity. He turned his gaze towards the colourful people of Baumonde who were passing by the Firefly.
