Hunter gave Zoe a smile in return, "Thank you. So ... eh ... are there any rules around here? I don't want to upset anyone..."
"You can go wherever you like, except the cargo bay," Mal told him. "You can help the crew out with their tasks if you like, but nobody'll be forcin' you and nobody'll be payin' you if you do. You got any skills?"
"Urm," Hunter thought about it. Sure, sniffing out browncoat scum, arresting them, torturing them, gathering valuable information, handling weaponry.... "I'm quite good at ... maths?" He shrugged.

Jayne grunted again. Exactly what this ship needed, another good-for-nothing brainiac. If it wasn't for the medical skills and Mal's authority he wouldn't even put up with softy-Simon and his messed up sister. So the prospect of travelling with another one of those so-called 'smart' ones wasn't really appealing to him.
"Good at maths?"Zoe repeated, "Well, Sir, maybe he can convince you that offending 5 men in a bar isn't the clever way to go when you are out there alone" she playfully mocked her Captain, referring to a .. situation.. on a planet they stopped on only very briefly a couple of weeks ago.

"I wasn't offending, merely ... commenting," Mal argued in return, with a sly smirk of his own. "It was their choice to take it personally,"
"Well, I think maths will be very useful on Serenity," Kaylee smiled, encouragingly. "He could help Simon with the doses, and Wash with co-ordinates if he needs it," She said, trying to think of any way their new 'friend' could be of use. "If you want to of course,"

Simon entered the dining area again, just in time to hear Kaylee mention how Hunter could help him with the doses. "Medicine is a highly specialised subject, and I'm sure mister Finley wouldn't want to bring anyone in danger by accidentally administering the wrong dosage." he responded, still thinking about River who still seemed a little upset when he left her cabin.

Kaylee glanced up at Simon. "Oh ... right ... of course," She smiled. "It was just an idea. We'll find something useful for you,"
"That's fine," Hunter said. "You don't need to make me feel useful. I'm not here as crew, I know that. I'll just sit quietly in my shuttle and not bother anyone," He joked, standing up.
"Oh, no! Don't do that." Kaylee said, glancing between the two men, Hunter and Simon. "Simon didn't mean to offend ... did you?"

Simon looked up from his thoughts, and thought to see a hint of disappointment in Kaylee's eyes. . "What? Ehm.. no. No, that wasn't my intention." he tried to reassure her and Hunter. "I'm sorry, I was just thinking about something my sister said. I didn't mean to be impolite." he said and forced a smile to emphasize his words.
Meanwhile his thoughts drifted back to River and the look of panic in her eyes. Right before he had left her cabin she had grabbed his arm and had looked at him with such intensity."Filth!" she had whispered again, "Filth!" But what did it mean?

Kaylee put a hand lightly on Simon's arm to get his attention, looking at him with a questioning glance, silently asking what was wrong.
Hunter observed the glances between the two, quickly forming a plan in his mind, but first that meant them trusting him. "I'm sorry, I wasn't offended, I fear I don't know any of you at all well enough to let out my inappropriate sense of humour yet."
"Inappropriate in the sense it aint funny?" Jayne grunted.
"Yes! Yes, that's exactly it," Hunter laughed.

Simon looked up at her touch, giving her 'thanks for caring, it'll be all right.. I hope ' glance back.
Zoe looked at Hunter and smiled at the way he dealt with Jayne's rude comment. She could see he was a guy that wasn't easily intimidated. And when traveling on board of the Serenity, with the situations they get themselves in from time to time, that would probably be a bliss rather than a curse.
She glanced at Mal, and gave him -almost unnoticle- a little nod, as to ask him to step away from the group with her for a second.

Mal looked over the group, his gaze meeting Hunter's, "If you'll excuse me, I have Captainy things to attend to ... Zoe?" He called his first mate along with him, pretending it was his idea to go aside. "Kaylee, give our guest the tour," He called behind him as he walked out of the dining area to the cargo bay.
Kaylee tore her gaze away from Simon, "Sure thing, Captain," She smiled. Hunter held his arm out to her in a 'gentlemanly' manner, already putting his plan into motion to subtly mess with the crew of Serenity, and of course, the most obvious thing he noticed upon his arrival was the tension surrounding the young Doctor and the mechanic.

Zoe nodded to the 'command' and followed her Captain to the cargo bay. "What do you think about our new guest, Sir?" she asked quietly, when she was sure the others couldn't overhear them talking "he doesn't seem like the type we can feed just any excuse and he'll go along with it. Wash said it would probably only be a matter of days until we'll stumble upon the Alliance ship we're looking for. That doesn't give us a lot of time to prepare, nor to hide every step we take."
Simon's gaze went from Hunter to Kaylee and back at Hunter, who was holding his arm for Kaylee's to link in. He opened his mouth to make a comment, but closed it again unsure of what to say. He didn't want to show it, but it annoyed him a little that the newcomer made such a 'gentlemanly' gesture. He was very well aware that there wasn't a lot of ''courtly behaviour' going on at the Serenity. A playful bow to let each other pass through the hallway or Jayne mockingly imitating Simon's polite gestures towards Kaylee were the best it got amongst the crew of the Firefly ship. So Simon couldn't help but feel a little intimidated when he saw Hunter offering his arm to Kaylee, how casual it may have been.
