With the wind rushing past and the smell of salt water in her nose, Naomi felt like she was finally free. She looked to Kaleb, having been rather stiff and afraid to move until now, "This is great! I can't believe I'm controlling a ship."
She sighed and moved a lock of hair behind her ear, her eyes sparkling. She wasn't exactly sure where she wanted to go because she only knew of Tortuga, but she was glad to be out.

Kaleb quickly checked a line, then smiled from the bow as he leaned against the rail. "Aye, that's what a ship is. There's a hull and sails and a keel of course, everything that makes it up - but what a ship really is...is freedom. And once that freedom is achieved, there's nothing greater."

Naomi leaned again the wheel, but still had it in a tight grip. She nodded at his words, staring up to the sky. Both it and the sea were so blue, and she was growing to love the color.
"Aye..." She repeated, "I haven't the faintest clue as to where I'm going. Do you have anywhere you want me to go?"

Kaleb chuckled and turned to look out to sea. He gave a shrug, then motioned to their starboard side. "Why don't you change our heading to to the south, Captain, and take her a bit farther out? We can circle this rock and see if we can spot any ships coming in."

"Captain...? He he. Captain Kings." She liked the way that sounded. But when he mentioned other ships, she paled. "Other ships? We won't have to do anything, will we?" She asked with a hint of worry in her voice. This was her first day of sailing, and she didn't want to get into a ship battle.

Kaleb nodded, deadpan. "Aye love. I'll have to roll out the long nines and aim while you steer. It'll be a blast." He glanced over to her, a smile pulling at his lips. "I'm just kidding, of course. If we need to adjust course I'll let you know, but I think we'll be far enough out that we won't have a problem."

"Don't do that! My heart nearly jumped from my throat." Naomi said, patting her chest. She sighed and turned the wheel so they were moving in a starboard direction, which she knew was the right side. She was glad she read a lot of books on the subject, but no amount of reading could beat doing it herself.

They continued to circle the island, Kaleb pointing out niches and ports as well as the different types of ships they passed and their country of origin. He also began telling Naomi about the different riggings and sails as she steered, knowing it was a lot but positive she would catch on quickly.
"Would you like to go farther out, love?" he asked as they returned to where they had started. "We can visit the neighboring island if you'd like, as you're doin' such an excellent job and I think we'd make good time."

Naomi tapped her chin, looking to the port that was her home. She loved it like anyone would, but she was having too much fun on the ship. "We can go father." She said, steering it very slowly away from Tortuga.

"Aye Cap'n." Kaleb grinned. He let Naomi choose her heading and soon they were speeding towards the next island.
Miles off the coast, Kaleb's gaze narrowed as he looked into the distance, towards the Atlantic. White sails topped with the flag of the East India Trading Company perched on the horizon, three of the company's fastest ships anchored close together. "Bugger." he cursed, reaching into his pocket to retrieve his telescope. He opened the device up and peered inside, getting a better look at the ships.
