Alaura watched James and Elizabeth disappear in the crowd. Her heart fell as she watched them leave. She would do anything to be alone with James. But unfortunately, she was stuck with her parents and Beckett.
Pretending that she was not at all interested in what James and Elizabeth were talking about, Alaura asked Beckett, "Have you been at the party long? I just arrived and I was wondering if maybe you could show me around."

"Of course, miss", Beckett said.
"Behave yourself", Emily said.
Beckett took Alaura and introduced her to some of the guests.
"Laura", Elizabeth called.

Alaura followed Beckett around for a few minutes and pretended to be interested in meeting the guests when really all she was interested in was what was going on between James and Lizzy. She found it strange that James had taken Lizzy away by herself. It was almost rude!
"You seem to know a lot of people here," Alaura commented to Beckett.
When she heard Lizzy calling her name, Alaura waved her hand and called, "I'm over here!"

"You know what James said?" Elizabeth asked. "He said he wants to court me as I grow up!"

"He wants to...WHAT?" Alaura burst out a bit louder than she had meant to. She had completely forgotten that everyone was watching her. Blushing, she apologized to Beckett, "I'm sorry, that was rather loud."
Turning back to Lizzy, Alaura said, "Well...what did you say?"

"I-I couldn't say no", Elizabeth said. "My father agreed to it."
Emily came rushing through the crowd.
"What is this screaming about?" she asked.

"Oh," Alaura tried not to let her disappointment show. She tried to smile as she asked, "Is this what you want then?"
When Alaura saw her mom, her face paled and she murmured, "Screaming? Nobody was screaming." She looked to Beckett and Elizabeth to back her up.

"Laura was just surprised", Elizabeth said.
"I wasn't asking you", Emily said. "One more mistake like that, and I will send you home."
She pulled Alaura's ear.
"Do you understand me?"

"Yes mother," Alaura said, hanging her head in guilt. Once her mother had left, Alaura turned back to the others feeling rather embarrassed.
Unable to meet their eyes, she said, "Sorry about that. I guess maybe I'm not mature enough to be here after all." Alaura felt torn inside. No matter how hard she tried, she always seemed to displease her mother.

"But, you didn't do anything wrong", Elizabeth said.
"Nonsense", Beckett said. "Young women should yell or scream no matter what the situation is."
