Alaura sighed to herself. He obviously wasn't going to let her have any freedom. And he obviously wouldn't care what she wanted when it came to having children. Deciding that she no longer wanted to hear his plans for the future, she just nodded and said, "Of course, Lord Beckett."

"I knew that Elizabeth was no good!" Emily said. "I knew it from the start! Alaura, from now on I want you to have nothing to do with that girl!"

"Yes mother," Alaura replied like a good girl should. Alaura was kind of at wit's end. She couldn't communicate with her friends, James had pretty much disappeared off the face of the earth, and she was being forced into a horrible marriage. Alaura went on, "It's not like I'd be able to see her anyways as she's locked up. Mother, what date is my marriage again?"

"You will marry Lord Beckett once the fugitives are hanged. We have time to make your dress and the invitations."

"I see," Alaura said. To herself, she sighed with relief. She still had a little time before the awful marriage. After all, James was still who-knows-where. Alaura crossed her legs where she was sitting and asked curiously, "Do you think Lord Beckett even likes me?"

"Does it matter?" Emily asked. "Marriage isn't about liking or loving the other person. Remember what I told you? Love is for the weak!"

Alaura frowned. She must be weak then since she loved. Trying not to sound accusatory, she asked her mother, "What is the point of all this then? What's the purpose of life if you don't plan on loving?"

"Love doesn't concern us. What matters is that you marry a good man and provide him children. A son being the most important out of any of them. As you know your father and I have you instead of a son."

Alaura took offense to that. She frowned, "It's not my fault I was born a girl. I would much rather be a boy. They have choices and don't have to act as slaves to their wives!"

"But it is your fault that you came into your father and my lives", Emily said. "If you weren't born, I could've had a better career. Your father and I could be living in England if we wanted, but no! You had to come along and destroy our dreams. Now is your chance to make everything okay. Marry Lord Beckett and we will be among the richest and most powerful people."
