"He's right," Alaura said, nodding in Beckett's direction. "I should learn to control my tone of voice."
Taking a deep breath, Alaura composed herself and turned to Elizabeth, "I'm very happy for you."

"I hope this affects nothing between us", Elizabeth said.
*Timeskip*
"Alaura", 18-year-old Elizabeth said. "You know what happened between me and James?"

"Hm?" Alaura pretended that she wasn't all that interested in Elizabeth's affairs with James. She was expected to be lady-like and keep her emotions under control. Alaura lifted calm eyes to her friend and said, "Tell me what happened, Lizzy."

"The commadore...proposed to me", Elizabeth sadly said.
She looked down and sighed. She didn't want to marry James.

"He proposed to you?" Alaura echoed in a weak voice. Inside, she felt her heart breaking. She had seen it coming. After all, why else would the commadore want to court her? It still felt like a shock though. Trying to be happy for her friend, Alaura said, "Well...that's great new then, isn't it?"

"Not really", Elizabeth said. "I don't want to marry him. I'm not in love with him. I love someone else."

A tiny bit of hope sparked up in Alaura's heart. Wishing that Lizzy would listen to her, Alaura said, "Well then, don't marry him! Marry the man who you love." Alaura paused for a moment and turned to Lizzy with questioning eyes, "Who is it that you love anyways?"

"Will Turner", Elizabeth answered. "But my father would never allow it. He's a blacksmith. There's nothing I can do about the engagement."

"Are you sure?" Alaura asked. "Have you talked to your father about Will Turner? Maybe if your father knew how you felt about him, he would change his mind. What do you think? Besides, marriage should definitely be about love."

"He wouldn't understand", Elizabeth said. "He's never been married to anyone except my mother. Even after she died, he still wouldn't marry another woman."
